Late Medieval Songs From Cyprus
Summary
This is a concert version of LA MORRA's much-praised CD devoted to the neglected secular repertoire from the magnificent early fifteenth-century manuscript, the origins of which are associated with the Lusignan family - French rulers of Cyprus throughout the High and Late Middle Ages. Although Torino, Biblioteca Universitaria, J.II.9 (as the manuscript is technically called) is perceived as a 'major source of late medieval polyphony' (K. Kügle), it is a misterious one, since the music it contains is anonymous and not known from other sources (except for certain portions of plainchant). Pieces selected for this programme not only belong to the finest in the manuscript, but also in the entire repertoire of French secular music surviving from the Late Middle Ages. Much performed by LA MORRA since the recording session, this demanding yet strikingly beautiful music has appealed to audiences all over Europe (including Cyprus); to date, this programme remains one of ensemble's favourites.
