25 years ago, in Antwerp (Belgium), we made our first public appearance under the name “La Morra”. This August, exactly 25 years later (almost to the day), La Morra stood on stage of AMUZ to celebrate the occasion.
Following this performance, Australian concert reviewer Christopher Price Pontifex wrote: “As we have come to expect from La Morra, the performances were sophisticated, supremely polished and profound and the works selected were of universally superior quality. It would be hard to think of two more ideal singers than Schleifer and Haun for this repertory. The instrumental playing in this difficult music was also top notch, with very nicely judged pacing and rhythm. The whole ensemble’s evocative approach to text expression was deeply satisfying. One particularly moving work was the anonymous “De cuer je soupire”, beautifully evoked by Ivo Haun. I was also very moved by “Jour a jour la vie”, its arching upper line melody sung with tenderness by Doron Schleifer. Also delightful was “Tuba gallicalis”, an instrumental piece which opened with a series of trumpet-like fanfares played on solo lute by Gondko. In a Festival with so many highly successful performances, La Morra was a stand out.”
On October 17th, 2025, La Morra will celebrate again in Basel, this time with a special concert devoted to the 15th and 16th century music from the Upper Rhine area. Find out more here (in German).
